Synonyms: Find Similar Words & Examples

A synonym is a word, morpheme, or phrase that means the same as or nearly the same as another word, morpheme, or phrase in the same language. Begin, start, commence, and initiate, for example, are all synonyms; they are synonymous. The standard test for synonymy is substitution: one form in a sentence can be replaced by another without changing its meaning. Words are considered synonymous in only one sense: for example, long and extended are synonymous in the contexts long time or extended time, but long cannot be used in the phrase extended family.
